Catch-up Post – Bern’s and Flight Street Food (Tampa)

We fell behind posting a little. Let’s catch up some.

Bern’s – Sunday, 8/19
If you live in Tampa and have never been here, you cannot say you like food. You just can’t. I know it’s pricey; quit whining and save your pennies. Make sure you take the kitchen tour and go to the dessert room.

We went to Bern’s this particular evening to celebrate Husband’s parents’ 45th wedding anniversary. As usual, it was amazing. Bern’s is great for larger groups (we had 7 people).

Highlights:
-We love their new cocktail menu. Really revitalized the bar area.
-Wife had the short rib special and it was phenomenal.

Flight Street Food – Tuesday, 8/21
Flight is new in the Northdale area. We went because Wife spotted a Groupon and the place looked like a good idea. All the menu items are small plates meant for sharing.

She says:
We had:
-Crispy shrimp rangoons ($7.45) – really good
-BBQ pork sliders ($11.23) – really great idea (pulled pork + mac & cheese + an onion ring) but the BBQ sauce tasted like they bought it (versus making it)
-Bacon mac balls ($7.45) – mac & cheese wrapped in bacon and fried, HOW COULD YOU GO WRONG WITH THAT?!
-Pork eggrolls ($7.23) – really good
-Goat cheese cakes ($8.23) – delicious, especially the chopped tomato that comes with it
-Chorizo flatbread ($8.23) – has potential but they put too much cheese on it and the chunks of plantain were too big

I like that this place has wine and beer flights available but right now they don’t have enough of a selection of either to really take advantage of that. They do, however, have a lot of Hangar One cocktails and those were really tasty.

Liked:
-The staff (really nice and attentive)
-The staff’s outfits (styled to look like old stewardesses)
-The concept (international street food? hell yeah!)
-Most of the food (real potential)
-The cocktails
-Some of the decor

Didn’t like:
-The lighting (too bright)
-Some of the decor (a little cheesy/cheap)
-The wine & beer selection
-The dessert selection (they only had one when we were there and it involved bananas, which Husband hates, so we went to Coldstone on the way home)

Bottom line – Flight needs to go one of two ways: way more upscale, or fashionable dive. Right now they’re stuck in a middle path that reminds me of your neighborhood sports bar. We’ll go back for now but they need to work on their concept or they’ll lose us.

He says:
First I’m going to start off with what I loved which was almost everything. The drinks were great but small. I went through them rather quickly. But they are very creative and use one of my favorite vodkas, Hangar 1. The drinks were very crafty and I think they did a fantastic job on the menu.

The food was also delicious. The crispy shrimp rangoons were my favorite; they were crispy on the outside and bursting with a great seafood flavor. The pork eggrolls were also great, they were filled with a lot of pork and not a lot of cabbage and other fillers like most. The goat cheese cakes were also very good, kind of like bruschetta with fried goat cheese squares instead of toasted bread. The bacon mac n cheese balls were also very good. I’ve never had anything like then and I thought they did an excellent job with them. The BBQ pork sliders, I’ll give this just a good, I thought the onions were overpowering and you could barely taste the pork.

On to what I did not like. There is not much I did not like but there were some things I noticed. Many of the small plates are served with a dipping sauce, but there are only two dipping sauces which are each served with several plates. The other issue I had was the item I was most excited for, the chorizo flat bread. There was no enough chorizo and giant pieces of plantains on it… the cheese was not a good quality and there was tooooooo much of it. And I never ever say there is too much cheese on anything. I was also not a fan of the fried beans instead of pizza sauce. Another issue I had was that almost everything was fried. I think they need to focus a little more on fresh food and not deep fry everything. The last gripe I have was that there was only one dessert and it was banana based. I do not like bananas… that and peaches are the only two fruits I do not enjoy.

Overall I really like this place and I would definitely go back, I wish the drink prices were a little cheaper but the food is well priced and it is very good.
